He had only lived there a total of seven years, divided into various seasons throughout different zones of the valley metropolis.

They parked the car at a Cada supermarket in La Florida, walked several blocks to a por puesto van stop and rode along an avenue into el Centro. They reached the DIEX building after crossing a thick morning street near the former Universidad Central and Biblioteca Nacional building, crowds of buhoneros setting up their low tables and stands under tarps along the sidewalk, under the sculpted white facade of the walls, closed wooden window shutters. Crossing the street he watched an ancient tree jutting from the street, its lower trunk painted white as it intersected the crosswalk, diverting traffic into two lanes of metal. He was trying to write the book of that city he was also trying to leave. It seemed heavy prose crowded his talent as a reader of fictions and a minimalist tendency eroded his stanzas. Or was he imagining the city again?
The doctors at the DIEX were multiple and for the most part blessedly reasonable and responsive. Having expected talibanes grinning at his U.S. passport, what actually ensued were hours of nervous, patient, humbling waiting under dull lights in dilapidated office clusters on three different floors. Following one doctor to another's office, leading finally to the doctor in charge of managing Venezuela's borders. During these hours, he had noticed the dozens of lines for various documents throughout the building, permits and approval stamps at a stand-still pace ("I had not thought death had undone so many."). Eventually, their explanations and waiting were fruitful, and the doctors reached an agreement, granting them a temporary permit to leave the country anytime within the next week.
